Washington Township also shares its borders with other boroughs of Bergen County, such as Ho-Ho-Kus, Emerson, Hillsdale, Saddle River, Paramus, Westwood and Ridgewood. It is surrounded by several lakes such as Lake Tappan, Schlegel Lake, Musquapsink Brook, Oradell Reservoir, Woodcliff Lake Reservoir and Pascack Brook. Named after erstwhile USA president George Washington, Washington Township is present in the northern part of Bergen County and some 15 miles away from New York City. The township was created by an act of the New Jersey Legislature after incorporating the territories of Hackensack River and Saddle River, which were once parts of Harrington Township.
